Photo Gallery | Viewer Captures Aftermath of Wrong-Way Accident

Viewer Shirley Martinez was driving on the U.S. 95 early Thursday morning and happened upon the wrong-way accident that claimed two lives immediately after it occurred.

The man who was hit head-on by the wrong-way driver on U.S. 95 near Boulder Highway has died, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The lanes were closed for several hours this morning. Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Jeremie Elliott says dispatchers received several calls about a Ford Explorer traveling northbound in southbound lanes.

Elliott says the vehicle was first reported on the highway at the Russell Road, and made it past Flamingo before slamming into a Toyota just before 5 a.m. Both of the vehicles burst into flames.

The male driver of the Explorer died, while the driver of the Toyota was taken to the hospital where he died.

A spare tire from one of the vehicles bounced into northbound lanes. That triggered another crash when a motorist stopped to move it.
