One local elementary school celebrated being named a Five Star School Thursday.

Wengert Elementary School is one of 37 schools in the Clark County School District to earn the award. The district looks at academics, achievements, culture, climate, reviews from parents and test scores. This is the first year that CCSD has used the star system.

The school was also put into a raffle with other Five Star Schools around the school district. It won, and the principal received a check from Silver State School Credit Union for $5,000, which the school can use anyway it likes.

“The money is going to be allocated to supplement and support the technology resources and computer lab that we have here,” Principal Suhala Mustafa said.

Principal Mustafa says the school has a high population of English language learners and 70 percent of the students are on the free or reduced lunch program. She says the school is committed to sustaining the improvements it has had over the past five years.

“We can beat the odds. We can sustain growth and we can be as good as any other students in the valley,” Principal Mustafa said.

Teachers, staff and Clark County School District administrators were treated to a lunch by Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop.
