County offering swim lessons in time for summer

Clark County's parks and recreation is opening registration for swim lessons and other aquatics programs May 15.

The lessons are available at 10 of the 14 county aquatic facilities. Lessons are offered twice per week in four-week sessions through out the summer. The cost is $35 per session.

Mail-in registration starts May 15, Online registration starts May 17 and walk-in registration starts May 19.

Last year, more than 18,800 people enrolled in the county's aquatic programs.

Besides swim lessons, the county offers the Lifeguard Education Awareness Program or LEAP. The program offers swimming instruction, lifeguard training, CPR certification and information about water-related careers.

The program is available at only four recreation centers, space is limited and there are age restrictions. For more information, call (702) 455-8505.

Skate Park Coming to Jaycee Community Park

The city of Las Vegas will be breaking ground Monday on a new skate park at Justice Myron E. Leavitt and Jaycee Community Park at Eastern and East St. Louis avenues.

When finished, the park will feature a 12,000 square feet area for skateboarders to use, and it will be lit for nighttime use.

The city is also adding shade canopies for the horseshoe and bocce courts and improved lighting for walkways. The horseshoe, bocce and shuffleboard courts will be closed during canopy construction.

The money for the construction is coming from the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act funds.

Construction is expected to be finished by July.

Cambridge Recreation Center is offering a way for kids in the community to stay active in the chilly winter months.

The center is offering several indoor sports options for kids, including arena flag football, indoor soccer and basketball.

Basketball tryouts:

  • 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5 for ages 6 to 8
  • 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6 for ages 9 to 11

Basketball parents meeting:

  • 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5 for parents of ages 6 to 8
  • 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6 for parents of ages 9 to 11 

Arena flag football tryouts and parents meeting:

  • 6:15 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23 for ages 7 to 8

Indoor soccer tryouts and parents meeting:

  • 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov.7 for ages 5 to 6

Free Tennis Lessons For All Ages Through September

Tennis clubs around southern Nevada will be hosting free tennis lessons throughout the month of September for Tennis Month.

The lessons are being made possible by the Cities of Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas and Clark County. There are also several corporate partners.

To participate in the lessons, register at ustanevada.com/getmainscreen.event or call (702) 792-8384. When people register, they will get a certificate for a free clinic and a free loaner racquet at the nearest facility. No experience is necessary and all ages are eligible.

Kids 10 and under who register get a free one-year USTA junior membership, a value of $19. The membership allows gets to participate in USTA-sanctioned leagues and tournaments.

Walkable Community Plan Needs Your Input

Walkable Community Plan Needs Your Input

With an eye toward making the region more walkable, Las Vegas officials want community input on what to include in their initial plan.

The plan area is centered in the southeast part of the city near the intersection of Eastern and Sunrise avenues, with boundaries extending in about a half-mile radius.

Residents and anyone who frequents the area are invited to view the plan and provide feedback online at www.YourVoiceVegas.com.

The plan provides a framework for establishing a safe and accessible network of community assets within a roughly 10-minute walk from the center of the plan area. The plan will not change the zoning or property land-use designations, but will focus on physical improvements, such as crosswalk enhancements, upgrading sidewalks and adding shade trees.

In addition to gathering information via YourVoiceVegas.com, the city also will be hosting four neighborhood meetings to gather community input, scheduled as follows:

Basketball Challenge to Celebrate County Recreation

Clark County will be celebrating 50 years of its Parks and Recreation department with a basketball challenge Saturday.

The challenge will start at 9 a.m. at the Cambridge Recreation Center, 3930 Cambridge Street. It is open to players of both genders between the ages of 6 and 13. There will be a $2 fee to participate.

Players will be divided into teams by age. Trophies will go to the top teams, but all participants will get a commemorative jersey.

The registration deadline is Thursday. Go to clarkcountynv.gov/parksregistration or visit the center's front desk to register.

Registration opens Thursday for swimming lessons at Clark County's pools.

The swimming lessons are offered in two-week sessions throughout the summer. They are offered on a first-come, first-serve basis at all 14 of the county's pools and water parks, including facilities in Laughlin, Overton and Indian Springs.
