Student Earns 'Lion King' Tickets for Entire School

Every student at one southern Nevada elementary school got a ticket to see one of the biggest musicals of all time.

The cast from "The Lion King" gave Long Elementary School 1,000 tickets in honor of the show’s 1,000th performance. The school was picked because of an essay written by fifth-grader Daniel Hernandez. He entered a contest where he had to explain why his school should go to the show.

“They narrowed it down to seven finalist essays. They had such difficulty picking out the winning essay that the other runners-up, the other six runners-up, also won consolation prizes,” Aaron de Jesus, who plays Timon in the show, said.

The announcement was a surprise for the entire school.

“I was so thrilled. The partnership office contacted us and told us that our student had won. I was so overjoyed to know that he finally achieved his dream. This kid worked so hard to make this happen and we're so excited,” Principal Dr. Joyce Brooks said.

"The Lion King" at Mandalay Bay is set to close on December 30.
