A groundbreaking was held Monday for a new skate park at Justice Myron E. Leavitt and Jaycee Community Park, which is at Eastern and East St. Louis avenues.

The new addition to the park will include 12,000 square foot of space for skateboarders to enjoy that will be lit for nigh time use.

Las Vegas city leaders say the park will benefit the entire community.

"Someone can duplicate essentially what they would have been doing harmfully to somebody's property very safely here and the public will be very grateful for that," Las Vegas City Councilman Bob Coffin said.

The skate park should be complete by this July. The park improvements will also include new shade canopies over horseshoe courts and LED lights along walkways.

The $1.3 million project is through a fund from the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act.
