Back-to-school event set for Friday at Cambridge Recreation Center

Students and parents will get a chance to get information about back to school from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Cambridge Recreation Center.

Advocates, experts and law enforcement will be offering information, school essentials and education. There will also be free car seats and bike helmets, along with school supplies.

Representatives from the Clark County School District transportation department will be there to answer questions about busing issues. Bus drivers will be on hand to talk to children and explain to them the safe way to get on and off the bus.

Cox Communications to host back-to-school fairs

Cox Communications will be sponsoring a series of back-to-school fairs starting this weekend.

The fairs will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through the month of August.

  • Saturday, Aug. 9 at Meadows Mall, 4300 Meadows Lane
  • Saturday, Aug. 16 at Boulevard Mall, 3528 S. Maryland Parkway
  • Saturday, Aug. 23 at Galleria at Sunset, 1300 W. Sunset Road

The fairs will feature a number of booths from community agencies and organizations offering help to local families returning to school.  

There will also be several division of the Clark County School District at the fairs to provide people with information on zoning, food services, transportation and school police.

Helping Kids Clinic will also be there to provide necessary immunizations for school-aged children for a minimal fee. Parents, who are interested in the service, must bring a shot record for immunizations.

County offering swim lessons in time for summer

County offering swim lessons in time for summer

Clark County's parks and recreation is opening registration for swim lessons and other aquatics programs May 15.

The lessons are available at 10 of the 14 county aquatic facilities. Lessons are offered twice per week in four-week sessions through out the summer. The cost is $35 per session.

Mail-in registration starts May 15, Online registration starts May 17 and walk-in registration starts May 19.

Last year, more than 18,800 people enrolled in the county's aquatic programs.

Besides swim lessons, the county offers the Lifeguard Education Awareness Program or LEAP. The program offers swimming instruction, lifeguard training, CPR certification and information about water-related careers.

The program is available at only four recreation centers, space is limited and there are age restrictions. For more information, call (702) 455-8505.

Annual Clark County Children’s Festival to offer fun and learning for all ages

The Winchester Cultural Center will again host the annual Children's Festival this weekend.

The Clark County Children’s Festival is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m April 26 at the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive.

County Offering Spring Break Day Camps

Clark County will be opening registration this Friday for its spring break day camps.

The day camps are for children 6 to 12 who need a fun and safe place to be during spring break. The camps will take place at Desert Breeze, Hollywood, Paradise and Walnut recreation and community centers.

The camps will be held from Monday, April 14 through Friday, April 18. The cost is $15 per day or $70 per week per child. Activities vary by center but they will include games, arts and crafts, sports and other recreational activities.

Mail-in registration starts Friday. Walk-in registration starts March 24.  Camps fill up on a first-come, first-serve basis. To apply, go to clarkcountynv.gov.

Campers must bring their own lunch and snack.

Cambridge Recreation Center is offering a way for kids in the community to stay active in the chilly winter months.

The center is offering several indoor sports options for kids, including arena flag football, indoor soccer and basketball.

Basketball tryouts:

  • 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5 for ages 6 to 8
  • 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6 for ages 9 to 11

Basketball parents meeting:

  • 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5 for parents of ages 6 to 8
  • 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6 for parents of ages 9 to 11 

Arena flag football tryouts and parents meeting:

  • 6:15 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23 for ages 7 to 8

Indoor soccer tryouts and parents meeting:

  • 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov.7 for ages 5 to 6

Back-to-School Fairs Planned Through August

The Clark County School District is working with its School-Community Partnership Program to present a series of back-to-school fairs through August.

The fairs will provide a one stop area for students and parents to get resource information for the upcoming school year.

Students and parents will be able to talk with CCSD representatives about several topics, including school lunches, zoning, police services and ParentLink.

The school district's Transportation Department will also have kiosks at the events where parents can get bus route information.

The Southern Nevada Health District will also be at the events to provide information on immunizations and other health topics.
