Flood project prevented damage in valley neighborhood

Desert Rose Golf Course

LAS VEGAS -- Road crews in the Las Vegas valley spent the day sucking up water and sweeping away debris off roadways.

Monday's storm dumped rain around the valley. The rainwater ended up on the streets, blocking cars from their destinations and preventing some school buses from dropping kids up on time.

The damage is nothing compared to what would happen, if flood channels did not criss-cross the valley and detention basins take in that water.

Monday's storm was a big test for one project in the neighborhood surrounding the Desert Rose Golf Course.

Every time there is heavy rain across the valley, the neighborhood near Sahara Avenue and Nellis Boulevard seems to get the brunt of the flooding. One inch of rain fell in a few hours.

"I was a little worried. I walked through the water to get to my car. I had my sandals on so I could walk through the water,” Tina Sbragia said.
