New Heart Procedure Keeps Patients in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS -- A new heart procedure is giving one Las Vegas man a new lease on life. He was the first Nevada patient to have this non-invasive, life-saving procedure at Sunrise Hospital.

Initially, 88-year-old Bob Hurd wasn't thrilled about being the guinea pig for the new Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement procedure. But when he sat up in his hospital bed off the ventilator just a few hours after the surgery, his initial fears were put to rest.

Hurd is a frequent visitor to Sunrise Hospital. Over the last three years, he's been admitted for chest pains, shortness of breath, and weakness, all because of a leaky valve.

"When the heart was pumping, the valve wouldn't open adequately to let the blood get to his brain and vital organs," said interventional cardiologist Dr. Branavan Umakanthan.
