Cancer Navigator Program to be Celebrated at Event Friday

The success of a program that helps newly diagnosed cancer patients navigate their treatment will be celebrated at a breakfast set for Friday.

The American Cancer Society Patient Navigator Program at Sunrise Hospital and Sunrise Children's Hospital started in 2005 with a grant from Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

The program pairs a cancer patient with a navigator who takes them through the dozens of tasks that come up while battling the disease, from finding a wig to the sea of paperwork.

Since the program was first established, it has helped thousands of people focus on fighting cancer and not on the task that come with it. In 2012 alone, the program helped 1,600 cancer patients and their families.

The event Friday will be held at Sunrise Hospital and wil feature testimonials from navigators and the patients they have helped.
