Day of the Dead Preparations Underway

Clark County is looking for artists, performers, crafts people and food vendors for this year’s celebration of the Mexican holiday El Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead.

The two-day festival will be November 1 and 2 at the Winchester Cultural Center. The festival will feature art exhibits, performances, children’s activities and food.

Festival organizers are looking for people to create altars known as ofredas. The altars are created in memory of deceased loved ones. In past celebrations, ofredas were large enough to be displayed in nearby Winchester Park. The displays will be judged and prizes awarded in three categories. The deadline to reserve space for ofredas is October 15.

The celebration will also feature readings of calaveras, which are traditional satirical poems written about the living. Calaveras must range between four and 40 lines, and can be in either English or Spanish. They must be submitted to the Winchester Cultural Center before October 8. Submissions must include the writer’s name, address and phone number. There will be prizes for first, second and third place.

Anyone interested in participating in this year’s celebration can go to clarkcountynv.gov for more information.
