Patio Fire Near Maryland and Charleston Displaces Two

LAS VEGAS -- Las Vegas Fire and Rescue responded to a patio fire at 1200 Franklin Avenue near Charleston Boulevard and Maryland Parkway around 1:45 p.m. Saturday.

Fire investigators say the fire started on a outside patio and spread to the interior of the home.

Fire investigators ruled the fire accidental.

They say the fire started on a very large glass table on the patio near the pool. Occupants told investigators that three people were sitting there smoking prior to the fire.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue are not ruling out the possibility of careless smoking.

No one was injured in the fire.

The fire damage estimate is $75,000.

Two people have been displaced from the home.

The Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers are meeting with the residents and will ensure everyone has a safe place to sleep and has food, clothing, medication and other essentials.

Cousin: Meth Changed Man Charged in Mother's Killing

LAS VEGAS -- Family members of Bill and Kathy Wilson said they are devastated by the attack against the couple.

The couple were shot in their car as they were arriving home early Wednesday morning.

The couple's adult son, Jeffrey Wilson, 28, was arrested in connection with his mother's slaying. His father was severely injured after being shot several times and is in a coma.

"You don't think this is going to happen to your family," said the couple's niece, Elizabeth Gentry. "It's like a lifetime movie that you watch on TV."

Gentry said her cousin, Jeffrey Wilson, had a good head on his shoulder, and had a job and two children.

But he had also started using drugs, Gentry said.

"I think everything accelerated in the past year," she said. "It's just amazing how things change because of a situation."

LAS VEGAS - As a senior at Valley High School, David Michaels never dreamed of a professional basketball career. That's because he didn't even make the varsity team until his junior year at Valley.

"Never thought in a million years I'd be in this position coming out of high school," he said.

Still, he landed a spot at Division III Whitman College in Washington, where he was average until holiday break of his junior year.

"We were given a task of running a certain amount of miles over our Christmas break," he said.

He didn't run all the miles required, so when he got back to school, he hit the gym.

"Woke up the next day, started running on the treadmill and had one of the best seasons our team's seen in the last 25-30 years," he said.
