Commissioners approve funding for affordable housing projects

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — People in southern Nevada will soon have more affordable housing options. The Clark County Commissioners approved funding for two projects that could help more than 400 low-income seniors and families.

The Blue Diamond Senior Apartments is a new project that will create 112 one-bedroom units and 83 two-bedroom units. It will be built at the corner of Blue Diamond road and South Quarterhorse Lane. It is expected to open in summer 2021.

The Woodcreek Apartments is a complex already located on Pennwood Avenue. The 232 units there will be renovated over the next year and a half.

Both complexes will be for residents who earn less than 60 percent of the area median income.

The projects total $81.6 million, and $26 million of the projects will be paid through private activity bonds that the commissioners approved Tuesday... Read More

20-year-old arrested for allegedly shooting, killing roommate

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A 20-year-old woman was arrested Monday for allegedly shooting and killing her roommate. According to police, the shooting happened on August 15 in the 5000 block of Duneville Street near S. Jones Boulevard and W. Flamingo Road.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to University Medical Center where he died. 
 
As a result of Metro’s investigation, Maya Santos was found to have been involved in the deadly shooting. She was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center.

Local hoops star Daishen Nix commits to UCLA

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Trinity International, Las Vegas basketball star Daishen Nix has verbally committed to play at UCLA (he wears #1 in the dark jersey in the video). Nix is considered by CBSSports.com to be the top high school point guard in the nation. He is 6’5″, shoots 45.5% from 3-point range, but is perhaps best known for his passing skills.

On Monday Nix narrowed his choices to 5 schools, UCLA, Kentucky, Maryland, Alabama and Kansas, before choosing the Bruins.

Die Antwoord dropped from Life is Beautiful after alleged homophobic attack

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — South African rap group Die Antwoord has been pulled from Las Vegas’ Life is Beautiful Music Festival after an alleged homophobic attack on Hercules and Love Affair.

This comes after a video surfaced on YouTube of a 2012 altercation between members Ninja and Yolandi Visser and Hercules and Love Affair’s Andy Butler. The footage, shot by Anwoord’s former cameraman Ben Crossman, allegedly shows Ninja and Yolandi directing homophobic slurs at Butler, who is gay. ... Read More

Mexican Baseball Fiesta returns to Las Vegas Ballpark

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Tickets go on sale Wednesday, August 21 for the Mexican Baseball Fiesta at the Las Vegas Ballpark. The match-ups between two of the top teams in the Pacific League of Mexico — Los Naranjeros de Hermosillo and Águilas de Mexicali — will be September 20-21.

This “spring training” for the winter league teams promises to provide a fun, colorful and exciting event for the whole family.

The Pacific League of Mexico was founded in 1945 and plays from October to February. The league has produced MLB talents like Fernando Valenzuela, Mike Piazza and Curt Schilling.

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Some air conditioning tips from the federal government are raising eyebrows. Energy-Star recommends keeping your thermostat at 78 degrees in the summer.

The energy saving program also says you should crank it up to 85 when you’re not home and 82 when you’re asleep! Energy-star recommends using a programmable thermostat to implement the settings it says are best.

Many people on the internet have expressed passionate opinions on the topic. Some say those temps are ridiculously hot, while others claim to find them perfectly comfortable.

Man arrested for firing shots at Lowes in Bullhead City

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Bullhead City Police arrested the man allegedly responsible for the shooting at the Lowes. Devin Gene Monreal, 23, was arrested on a temporary felony warrant for attempted homicide.

According to officers, on Monday, Aug. 19 at approximately 4:40 p.m., Monreal was sitting in the Lowes parking lot when four men in a white Dodge Dakota truck pulled up next to him, and they all begin to argue.

The four men got out of their vehicle and confronted Monreal by hitting his windshield. Police said witnesses told them that is when Monreal pulled out a handgun and started firing rounds at the men. Monreal continued to fire shots at the men as they tried to run to safety, police said... Read More
