New Kyle Canyon exit at US95

The Nevada Dept of Transportation held a ceremony Thursday (062019) to mark another milestone in the $78-million widening of the freeway between Ann Road and Kyle Canyon. Nathan Tannenbaum reports.

Drivers on US95 in the far northwest valley are well aware of all the construction work that’s been going on for more than a year in this area: the cones, the detours, and the delays.

Representatives from the NDOT, Regional Flood Control District, US Forest Service (even Smokey Bear) were on hand to mark the occasion.

Sue Klekar, from the Nevada office of the Federal Highway Administration, said the entire area will eventually be part of Interstate 11, connecting Phoenix to Las Vegas – as well as Reno and Carson City.

The new interchange will help handle the ongoing growth in the area, with number of cars there expected to double in the next couple of decades.

10-year-old girl climbs Yosemite’s El Capitan

EL CAPITAN, Calif. (AP) — A 10-year-old Colorado girl scaled Yosemite National Park’s El Capitan and may have become the youngest person to climb one of the most celebrated and challenging peaks in the world.

Selah Schneiter of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, completed the 3,000-foot (910 meters) climb of the vertical rock formation with the help of her father, Mike Schneiter, and family friend, Mark Regier.

The trio took five days to climb the Nose – the best known route – and reached the summit on June 12, Mike Schneiter said. It typically takes accomplished climbers four or five days to complete.

Reaching the top “was really overwhelming and emotional,” Selah said in a telephone interview from New York City, where she spent Wednesday doing media interviews.

“I was also kind of sad because it was over,” she added... Read More

NHP starts crackdown on HOV lanes

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – No more warnings. Starting today, anyone caught illegally using the valley’s new HOV lanes will get a hefty fine.

The rules on 22 miles of high occupancy vehicle lanes changed last month.  They are now enforced 24/7.  Previously solo drivers could use the carpool lanes during off-peak hours.  It is also illegal to cross the double white lanes of an HOV lane.  Drivers need to wait for a broken line to enter or exit.

Before today, the NHP had promised to let HOV scofflaws off with just a warning.  But now a $250 fine takes effect.

Here’s a quick reminder for drivers:

  • Allowed in HOV lanes:
  • Vehicles with two or more people inside
  • Motorcycles
  • Emergency and law enforcement vehicles

Fighting for protection: Coyotes terrorize neighborhood near golf course

Jan Biggerstaff has created somewhat of a shelter in her backyard to keep coyotes away from her dogs.

“When this happened, we had it fenced all the way around,” Biggerstaff said. “There needs to be something done. “

The coyotes have surrounded the Las Vegas National Golf Course for years. Many residents, including Biggerstaff, say the animals have killed their pets.

“We went on a cruise, came home and my dog had been killed by a coyote,” said Biggerstaff. “The coyote jumped over the back fence, you can see how high it is. It’s what 7 feet?”

The Las Vegas National Golf Course’ General Manager, Coy Woods, says his team has bounced around several proposals.

“I cried two days solid for that,” Woods said. “That was bad news. She was a sweetheart dog.”

A barrier around the creek would cost millions. But, Woods says they’re willing to work with residents to trap them... Read More
