CCSD Surprises Valley High School Teachers with Renovated Lounge

Teachers and staff at Valley High School will enjoy a renovated breakroom, thanks to Goodwill of Southern Nevada.

Superintendent Dwight Jones and school board trustee Lorraine Alderman joined Goodwill representatives during a Monday after-school unveiling. Valley High School is one of more than two dozen schools that Goodwill partners with as part of the Student Work Experience Program (SWEP), offering high school-aged students with disabilities the opportunity to gain experience in a work environment while being supervised and supported by their teachers.

The lounge was furnished with items from Goodwill stores throughout the community and designed with comfort in mind.

Crews from the Las Vegas Valley Water District had to repair a broken water main Friday along Desert Inn Road.

The break happened just after noon between Mojave Road and Pecos-McLeod. Eastbound Desert Inn was closed down to one lane in the area.

According to the water district, the repairs could take up to six hours.

Sunrise Hospital Hosts Heart Health Lecture

 

Sunrise Hospital is hosting a lecture focusing on improving women's heart health.

The free women's heart disease lecture will be presented by Health to You, which is a health and wellness program run by the hospital.  Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Kathleen Benson will educate women on the differences between male and female cardiac symptoms, and how women can know their heart risks.

The event is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, August 30 in the Sunrise Hospital's auditorium. A light dinner and refreshments will be served. To reserve a spot, call 702-233-5300. 

Coroner ID's Dairy Queen Robbery Suspect

LAS VEGAS -- The Clark County Coroner has identified the man involved in Sunday's attempted robbery of a Dairy Queen with a samurai sword as 36-year-old Bong Pak.

The cause of death was gunshot wounds to the torso. The coroner has ruled the manner of death as a homicide. Metro Police say Pak tried to rob the Dairy Queen on Maryland Parkway and Karen Avenue just after 12:19 p.m. Police say a clerk fired at the suspect a total of two times.

Police say the shooting appears to be in self defense. No charges have been filed against the clerk at this time.

Police Arrest Second Suspect in Attempted Dairy Queen Robbery

LAS VEGAS -- A woman has been arrested in connection with a deadly robbery at a Dairy Queen restaurant in Las Vegas.

Metro Police arrested 47-year-old Carol Matteo. She is facing charges of robbery with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery and burglary.

Police say Matteo dropped off the suspect who was shot and killed when he attempted to rob the restaurant using a sword.

The male suspect, who has not been identified yet, was shot twice by a clerk in the restaurant.

 

Man With Sword Dead After Dairy Queen Robbery Attempt

LAS VEGAS -- A masked man attempting to rob a Dairy Queen with a samurai sword was shot in the chest and killed, according to Metro Police.

The incident happened around 12:19 p.m. Sunday at the Dairy Queen on South Maryland Parkway near Karen Avenue. Police say they believe the clerk fired at the man a total of two times.

The suspect was transported to Sunrise Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the shooting appears to have been in self-defense. No charges have been filed against the clerk at this time.

No other employees or customers were injured during the attempted robbery or shooting.
